Trauma Informed Youth Work in the Outdoors

We will be hosting an hour-long workshop which will give attendees an overview of who we are, what we do and why.

You can expect to learn about our Journey of Change, and our unique approach to working with young people who have experienced challenges with education, socialisation, trauma, and those associated with additional developmental and learning needs.

There will be a short presentation and chances for questions, followed by an activity facilitated by our team. Additionally, we will be sharing an example of how our approach is played out with challenging behaviours, and the ways in which our team support each other to navigate them.

El Warren – Charity Business Manager, BF Adventure

Since my qualification as a professional Youth Worker in 2001 I have had the privilege of working with young people throughout Cornwall, as a community based youth worker and targeted youth worker in Cornwall Council, and since 2015 in my role at BF Adventure.  I am passionate about developing and delivering quality services to meet the needs of young people and to supporting the professional development of youth workers in Cornwall.  Since 2021 I have coordinated the Level 2 and Level 3 Youth Work qualifications in Cornwall – delivered by a small, experienced, multi-agency team of youth workers.

The team at BF are a highly skilled and fabulous bunch of people.  There is a real thirst for learning and development amongst the team and we work hard to ensure that we remain dynamic – embracing new theory within our practice to ensure that our provision grows and develops to meet the needs of children and young people.

Alex Tighe – BF Adventure Duty Coordinator

Following a shift towards a career in Outdoor Education, I found myself drawn to the positive possibilities of engaging vulnerable and at-risk young people through adventurous activities. This, I have explored in the child-care sector, where I worked in a ‘crisis intervention’ focused role for young people struggling to maintain steady care placements, and now (for the past 4 years) the exploration continues at BF Adventure. It is here, that I have been able to see first hand, the importance and potential impacts of the relationships we can foster with young people to bring about and facilitate a journey of change. Promoting self-care, positive self-regard and personal agency in our client’s decisions and their consequences. We are able to offer this, and practice it, in ways and with a flexibility which ensure that each service is appropriate and bespoke, adapting to the changing needs of out young people. Needless to say, I feel it is a privilege to come to work every day
